About Mary Liz Thomson

Nationally Certified Professional in Mediation
Bilingual English/Spanish

I am a Nationally Certified Professional in Mediation. I trained in Mediation and specialized in Family Law with the NW Mediation Center, part of Washington’s Dispute Resolution Center System. I also studied all forms of mediation with the certification program of the National Association of Certified Mediators.

I began my career working in non-profits doing international relations in Wash DC, and I have always had a natural penchant for diplomacy and win-win negotiation. I’m fair minded and equitable, with strong tools to help people find resolutions that benefit everyone.

I am bilingual in Spanish and am curious about the world. I’ve travelled extensively.

As a mediator I can often help couples or disputants talk through issues in a way that they can’t on their own. Mediators don’t make decisions - we help people find their own solutions that they can settle on.  What I provide is a peaceful context that acknowledges where people are and guides them to the best future solutions.

My experience includes divorce coaching for individuals and couples, and guidance for  the many areas of divorce including child parenting agreements and financial settlements.  Even if you are utilizing a lawyer or you are in an adversarial situation, there are many areas of divorce that can be worked out with guidance and presented to your lawyer for review.

This coaching and mediation can also be applied to other kinds of disputes including tenant/landowner, small business owners, and family senior care planning.

My career has also spanned the world of storytelling, filmmaking, writing, and media. I am an award winning filmmaker with a lifelong interest in our environment.  For many years I worked on Studio Films, TV shows, and Independent films. This background has given me real world experience in negotiating and facilitating teams of people to get projects done and achieve everyones goals.  It also lends itself towards the open minded creativity often needed for successful mediation.

I have a B.A. in Law and Society from UCSB, and an MFA from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.  Highest Honors from both.
